2D Game Design: Character Design, Animation and Programming
Hi, my name is Ross Castle May.
I am the co-founder and creative director of Free fall Interactive Ltd
Let’s start where it all began,
My passion for being creative and playing games dates to my days at school. I was always doing doodles and creating little characters in my books, I spent many Saturdays going to the local games shop, trying out the latest games.
After college studying fine art a and sculpting, I worked as a free-lance artist creating sculptures, portraits and doing book illustrations for clients. It was during this time that I decided to learn more about what it takes to create games, so I enrolled on a games development course. It was on this course that I first met co-founder of Free Fall Interactive, David John Vandapeer. We worked together on several assignments during our time at college and quickly became friends.
During this time, we went to various games events and exhibitions, seeking a way in to the industry with our games concepts and combined skill sets. I have since created 3d sculptures in Z-brush for the likes of Lucas Arts and Marvel studios. Whilst David would go on to get first-class honours in his animation Degree.
We have composed a course to give students an insight into the creative pipeline behind a 2d game. The course covers three principal areas in the development process, Character Design, Animation and Programming. We want our students to focus on these principal areas, to help them create a focused and effective library of work for their portfolio’s.
Being the Lead artist for our company it has been my job to make sure that the look and feel of every aspect of the course is of a high standard and that it holds up well against our global competitors.
